Email lifetime timeline

How long does a temporary email last? It depends on when the next message arrives.

New FWD addresses are kept for 3 hours by default. Use the time remaining and the type of task to decide whether to extend it instead of keeping it indefinitely.

Quick estimate

Add a safety margin to the expected wait time.

If you expect to wait 20 minutes, keep the address for at least 40 minutes. If you still need a second confirmation, refund, or manual review, a temporary email is not a good fit.

Instant verification codes

Recommended window: 30 minutes. That covers one delivery attempt, a short delay, and one cautious resend.

Download links or trial notifications

Recommended window: 3 hours. Let the address expire once the download is complete and you have confirmed that you will not need to retrieve anything later.

Orders, accounts, and manual reviews

Recommendation: Don't use a temporary address. Future messages may arrive at unpredictable times, so use long-term forwarding or your regular email address.

Decision points

What to do at each of the three countdown points.

Extend the address only to finish the current task. Changing addresses destroys the old inbox, so save anything you need first.

  1. More than 60 minutes left: Keep waiting; there is no need to extend it. Confirm that you submitted the current address correctly to the sending website.
  2. 15–60 minutes left: If you are sure another email is coming, click “Extend lifetime”; otherwise, simply finish reading the messages already received.
  3. Less than 15 minutes left: Do not start a new sign-up process with the old address. Extend it first, or create a new address before you begin.
  4. Task takes several days or longer: Switch to long-term forwarding to avoid losing password resets, payment notifications, or review results.

A countdown marks a boundary, not a permanent identity.
